Annie and Jake – Two Ton Max Wedding

Two Ton Max Wedding, Ben Potter Photography

Annie and Jake were married on March 25th, with a ceremony and reception at Two Ton Max.

Jake and Annie have been together for five years, and when they told me their story, I was impressed by their commitment. Jake is from Torquay originally, so they drove back and forth between Torquay and Melbourne multiple times a week in order to make their relationship work. Now, they both live in Melbourne with their dog, Evie, where Jake works in finance and Annie works as a speech pathologist.

These two are both from large families, who made up the majority of the wedding guests, and it was clear in every moment that their families were the focus of their day. From the beginning, Jake set the tone as he had prepared a box of supplies for Annie’s father, James, for the wedding day—filled with socks, beer, that kind of thing. The box also included a letter that Jake had written for his new father-in-law, and from the look on James’ face as he read it, the letter clearly meant everything to him.

There was also a beautiful moment between Annie and her grandfather as she helped him get out of the lounge chair. She reached over to get his walking stick for him, and he then cheekily told the story of how Annie used to steal his walking stick when she was a little girl, thinking it was absolutely hilarious.

I also had so much fun talking to Jake’s parents, Sandra and Jeff, who live on a yacht in the Mediterranean and have been doing so for a number of years as they explore that part of the world. They will soon be heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean for a couple years, and I loved hearing their stories. I adore traveling!

While family meant the world to these two, there was unfortunately one person who could not attend, and that was Annie’s beloved sister. She went into labour during the wedding!

Annie & Jake, thank you for the privilege you have given me of creating your first family heirloom. I had an absolute ball during your big day, and I simply loved your amazing family and friends.

David & Sinead – Farm Vigano Wedding

Farm Vigano Wedding, Ben Potter Photography

David and Sinead were married on March 12th, with a ceremony and reception at Farm Vigano in South Morang.

These two met when Sinead was 14 and David was 15. He was actually her first boyfriend as well as her first kiss before she moved schools and they lost touch. A few years later, as she was walking to her new part-time job, she saw David drive past and wanted to talk to him. She didn’t know what to say, though, so instead, she sneaked around to the back of the car park and “bumped” into him! They reconnected right away and have been together for over 7 years now. After 5 years, he proposed to her on his birthday, and they have been saving up and looking forward to their dream wedding ever since.

For this wedding, I didn’t have a second shooter, so I went to David’s place first before meeting up with Sinead as she was getting ready. When a minor 30 minute delay crept into the day, Suzie, the venue organiser, handled it effortlessly and incredibly. Nothing was too much of a problem whatsoever.

Throughout the whole ceremony, one of the flower girls would not stop playing with the “aisle of petals,” and who can blame her? It was gorgeous! One of my favourite images was of her playing as well as an image of the little pageboy looking into the front window of Sinead’s car.

From there, it was off to the party, where the dance floor really took on a life of its own. The passion and love between family and friends on the dance floor was some of the strongest I have ever witnessed, especially between David and his core group of mates—he was obviously incredibly close to them.

David & Sinead, thank you for sharing this special moment in your lives with me. You relaxed effortlessly in front of the camera and there was just no wiping the smile off of your faces, which made my job an absolute pleasure!

It’s so obvious how in love you both are and wish you the very best for a happy and healthy life together. I had an absolute blast with you and thoroughly enjoyed capturing these timeless memories that will form your very first family heirloom.

Quat Quatta Wedding | Wedding photography locations

Located in Ripponlea, Melbourne Quat Quatta is one of Melbourne’s finest wedding venues. It is simply superb in all aspects and is a rather unique offering among the many venues this great city has to offer.

Click here to read about Pat & Ashlee’s wedding I recently shot there.

There are plenty of articles about the venue itself so I wanted to go into some detail about the myriad of different opportunities there are around Quat Quatta for breathtaking wedding photography, Rain, hail or sunshine!

Well let’s discard the hail bit!

A couple of tips when it comes to wedding photography.

When looking for wedding photography inspiration there are a couple of secrets I need to let you in on.

  • You are seeing the best of the best on Instagram, not the 60 frames the photographer took to achieve that one amazing image you see. 60 frames obviously takes a lot more time that one simple photo so keep this in mind.
  • When it comes to wedding photography a park is a park and a beach is a beach. A green background; flowers in your photos or a beach scene will basically look the same no matter which park / beach you end up going to.
  • Most B&G’s want photos in a couple of different locations which is great. Taking the above into account, there is no point going to two different parks.
  • You want contrast – beach and park; pier and park; old house and park. I think you get the drift.

Quat Quatta

Quat Quatta itself is an incredibly photogenic Victorian Mansion meticulously presented in a seamless blend of classic & contemporary. Dramatic dining room; romantic and intimate courtyard; bar lounge and luxurious bridal retreat.

Brighton Bathing Boxes

The iconic Brighton bathing boxes are a bit of a favourite for B&G’s. If it tickles your fancy its worth considering a few things.

Its only 5.3km / 12 mins drive from Quat Quatta.

  • If getting married in summer and it’s likely to be a hot day, be prepared to be photographed with a lot of people watching / in your photos. You are not going to have the beach to yourself unless the weather is ho hum.
  • Getting a park for that limousine or bridal cars will require extra time.

Obviously normal beach style photos can be shot in this location too.

In terms of light, the lower the sun is to the horizon the better. So that means as late in the day as possible.

As you can see in this photo, the sun was still very high so it means us photographers have to be very careful about unwanted shadows on faces and people squinting into the sun.

St Kilda Botanical Gardens

I have shot weddings on many different occasions here and it is a ripper. So many different little spots to work with.

Really nice winding paths; hedges; spectacular rose garden; deciduous trees that are beautiful colours in autumn; rotundas and walk ways.

In terms of light, it is much more forgiving during harsh, bright sunlight.

Distance – 1.6km / 4 mins drive

Ormond Rd Hill

A rather unique hill on the foreshore overlooking Port Phillip Bay and the city.

It provides for awesome photography in all conditions but does excel for sunsets or particularly moody / cloud / storm backdrops.

This is another great spot for wedding photography.

Lots of nice winding paths for walking shots. The rows of palm trees also make for great backgrounds. The beach is obviously right there as well.

Mark & Michelle – Intimate Marysville Wedding

Intimate Marysville Wedding, Ben Potter Photography

Michelle and Mark were married on November 26th, with a ceremony and reception at a private property in Marysville, Victoria.

Mark and Michelle only recently got engaged this past February in Tahiti! They had been together for over 5 years, with 2 beautiful dogs, and as things just started to fall into place for them, they decided that it was meant to be as they got on the fast track to getting married!

The two of them love being outdoors, which is why they chose this gorgeous, family-owned property with a beautiful backyard. Their eclectic, DIY style truly reflected their personalities perfectly as they held their wedding out under the festoon lighting, but it was the fact that the property had a special meaning to these two that truly made the surroundings beautiful.

I was able to capture so many stunning images—which is always easy when I have a beautiful couple and breath-taking setting. I particularly liked the way the sun came down through the gorgeous old oak tree, as well as the way the late afternoon sun cast an elegant backlight. And, of course, the breeze blowing Michelle’s veil made for a picture-perfect moment.

After the private ceremony under the backyard gazebo, it was time to celebrate with friends and family. My favourite part of the evening had to be the speeches. I was laughing my head off the whole time!

Mark & Michelle, thank you for asking me to be your wedding photographer. Your day was truly spectacular, and I was honoured to be part of it.

Elizabeth & Justin’s ‘Wedstival’ – King Parrot Cottages Wedding and Event Centre Lorne

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Elizabeth and Justin’s special day at King Parrot Cottages Wedding and Event Centre. These guys were my kind of people.

When I asked them to tell me about their story did they ever; Elizabeth proceeded to write a couple of pages about her love of animals, the outdoors and adventure, especially ones that involve a 4wd and caving. If they didn’t get properly stuck then it wasn’t enough of an adventure in Elizabeth’s eyes.

Only naturally, Justin proposed on a camping trip in the Snowy River National Park.

These two coined the term ‘wedstival’, well at least for me. Anzac weekend down in the Otways at a brilliant little spot called Pennyroyal, just behind Lorne.

The venue of choice was King Parrot Cottages and Event Centre, an amazing property that’s caters perfectly for the natural / country / rustic / party style wedding that can go for days if you want. There’s natural beauty wherever you turn, especially with the views across the valley and down in the camp ground at the bottom of the property, which has some stunning spots for a ceremony. Yep, that right, guests can stay on site.

Donkeys, alpacas, a Shetland pony, local wildlife as well as activities like mini golf, foosball, darts, air hockey, pool table, swimming pool and two spas make this place an incredible facility. And from a photographers perspective there’s just too much to work with. It’s perfectly suited to that natural, candid, real style photography we all love.

I hope enjoy their wedding.
